FAQ - Wedding Celebrants

How much does a wedding celebrant cost?

How much a marriage celebrant costs can depend on your location, their experience and the type of ceremony you opt for. A marriage celebrant can cost a few hundred dollars, to over a thousand dollars. Most marriage celebrants will offer different types of ceremonies, ie legals only to full package and may charge a travel fee. All of this will affect how much you can expect to pay for a marriage celebrant.

When should I book my marriage celebrant?

A marriage celebrant should be booked about 12 months prior to your wedding. After your wedding venue and wedding photographer, you should start looking for your marriage celebrant. The most popular wedding celebrants will book out 12-18 months in advance. You will be able to find a celebrant within 6 months of your wedding, however you won’t have the pick of the bunch.

How do I lodge a Notice of Intent to marry and when?

A ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ (NOIM) form needs to be lodged no later than one month prior to your wedding day but not before 18 months prior to your wedding date. A ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ (NOIM) form will be lodged by your celebrant after your NOIM has been completed and witnessed by an authorised witness.

What supporting documents do I need for the ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ (NOIM)?

Original birth certificates or passports as proof of identity and citizenship.

Divorce or death certificate if either party has been previously married and divorced or widowed, if applicable.

A name change certificate if applicable.

Proof of dissolution of previous marriages, if applicable.
